With 250 miles of world-class coastline, this region offers some wonderful choices- La Baule has Europe's finest beach, les Sables-d'Olonne has its pine forest and dunes, while Pornic has a more intimate atmosphere.

Away from the glorious beaches, there are river trips along the Mayenne or the Sarthe, or the little Loire. In stark contrast to its sister, the pace is slower and the villages smaller here. Further south is medieval Saumur, with its tall castle, while Fontevraud Abbey, the largest monastic complex in Europe, is nearby.
